What are the Benefits of Compression Socks?
There are lots of benefits to wearing compression socks in a wide range of circumstances. This is why we’ve made compression socks our life!
In its simplest explanation, compression socks can help to increase efficient blood flow (circulation) in the body, which may prevent cramping, spider veins, and blood clots, and also aid in muscle recovery.
The Science Behind Compression Socks
We have 16 miles of veins running throughout our bodies. The heart pumps blood into these veins, which carry blood throughout the body to deliver oxygen and nutrients to muscles. Once these deliveries are complete, the blood goes back to the lungs and heart to be enriched…and the process starts all over again.
There are certain situations and medical conditions that challenge this process, causing blood and fluids to pool in the ankles and feet. This is when compression can help.
Graduated compression begins with a slight squeeze or pressure at the foot, with the tightest compression at the ankle followed by a decreased squeeze up the leg. Graduated compression can help prevent blood from pooling in the ankles, returning it back to the heart and lungs more efficiently. As a result, the body experiences increased blood oxygen, which is believed to enhance athletic performance, speed up muscle recovery, and leave legs feeling refreshed and energized.
Does The Strength of Compression Matter?
Compression strength is described as a range, with the higher number representing the pressure at the ankle and the lower number representing the pressure at the top of the sock. This unit of pressure is referred to as mm/Hg (millimeters of mercury). Lily Trotters offers 15-20 mmHg of compression (Moderate Compression); the level of compression that is often recommended during pregnancy or long flights, and to runners, crossfitters, or anyone who sits or stands for long periods of time. Talk to your doctor to see if 15-20 mmHg is right for you.
Compression Socks Can Look Good and Feel Great!
The trouble with compression socks to date is they’ve been boring and uncomfortable, lacking style and comfort. Just because they have medical and health benefits it doesn’t mean they can’t be comfortable, colorful and fun! It's time we expect more out of our compression socks.
It’s time we had choices beyond thick, hard-to-get-on athletic socks and plain and boring medical socks. It’s time for Lily Trotters.
While options in compression are slow to emerge, Lily Trotters are unique — marrying original, stylish and fashionable designs to high-performance compression.
Let’s bring compression socks out of the closet and onto the catwalk!
More Benefits of Using Compression Socks
Benefits of Compression Socks for Running and Exercise
Increase athletic performance and speed up muscle recovery. Studies have shown that wearing compression socks while working out stimulates blood flow and reduces lactic acid build-up – delaying the onset of muscle soreness and helping legs recover faster from a hard run. Benefits of Compression Socks During Pregnancy
Alleviate swollen legs and feet while pregnant. Changes during pregnancy can cause blood to back up in veins, making clots more likely to form. If a pregnant woman is less mobile, blood is even more likely to back up in leg veins and form a clot.
Benefits of Compression for Flying and Air Travel
Travel free of foot and leg discomfort. On long flights venous pooling is common, putting us at risk for a DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis). Cabin air pressure can also lead to dehydration, which makes our blood thicker and more likely to pool. Wear compression socks, drink water and not alcohol - for a healthy flight.
Benefits of Compression for Nurses and for Sitting or Standing All Day
Sit and stand all day with energized legs. Sitting or standing for extended periods of time can often cause blood to pool in your legs. If unable to move around and engage your muscles, a compression sock can help usher fluid out of your legs.
Health and Medical Benefits of Compression Socks
Maintain youthful looking legs and healthy veins. Compression can increase venous circulation and overall leg health and may delay the onset of new spider and varicose veins and keep ones you may already have from getting worse, possibly for years.
